1933-1941 NP railroads Athol Northern Pacific wrecks train wreck Northern Pacific train wreck north of Athol, Idaho June 13, 1941. Engine #2239 and tender look like they derailed on a curve and the following boxcars continued on, derailing adjacent to the engine. The men in photo are using a “chain gang” method to pass flats of cherries from a still -upright refrigerator car to a stack adjacent to the track. “Everyone in the area had cherry pie that week.” Ross Hall photo. Sandpoint News-Bulletin, June 19, 1941: “Thousands View Train Wreck Near Athol; 2 Killed. Cause of the derailment of the eastbound Northern Pacific cherry special just this side of the Kootenai-Bonner county line east of Athol last Friday morning, which resulted in the death of the engineer and fireman, still remained a mystery this week. Northern Pacific railway officials who have investigated the accident as yet have given no reason for the derailment of a locomotive, tender, coach and nine refrigerator cars on a curve. The wreckage was strewn over a large part of the Northern Pacific’s right-of-way and the sand dome from the locomotive was hurled 50 feet from the right-of-way. The locomotive and some of the refrigerator cars were demolished. Farmer Brings Word A farmer living nearby, who hurried one of the brakemen to Athol, brought the first word of the wreck which occurred at 10:38 and resulted in a traffic problem as cars carried thousands of curious persons to the scene for the next three days. It is reported by officers that thousands of cars bearing licenses from many states visited the scene of the wreck and Sunday bought cherries which were sold there. Those who were first to make their way to the wreck, approximately two miles from the highway, encountered “rough going” over the narrow road and across a farmer’s ploughed field, but by Sunday evening a “two-lane highway,” well packed, easily led motorists to the scene of the wreck. Two Dead The dead were C. F. Reeves, engineer, and C. A. Parks, fireman, both of Spokane. The Friday-the-13th tragedy saw Engineer Reeves at the throttle, or so-called Johnson bar,” with his hands gripped to the lever. His body was found in the wreckage 10 feet from the ground as the locomotive lay on its side about 50 feet from the tracks. Parks was hurtled a considerable distance through the air, his body being found 150 feet from the engine. Escaping injury were two brakemen, J. A. McKinnon and Carl Moore, both of Spokane and Walter Tompkins, conductor, who also received no serious injuries. The badly twisted rails were soon replaced by extra gangs of section workers and trains routed over the tracks again Friday evening. The wreck was one of the worst this division has had in many years, said Northern Pacific officials. The cherry special was traveling on passenger schedule a few minutes behind the second section of the eastbound North Coast Limited.” My uncle, my older brother and I were among the “thousands of curious persons” who came to the site. I was eight years old at the time. I remember the bumpy, very dusty driving on the makeshift road from Highway 95, and numerous people milling around the wreck. –Alan Robertson, Sandpoint, 12 Mar 2006. 87

PHOTO: Another early scene at Camp 23. The tender tank on engine no.1 was increased in height to the same level as the fuel tank in one of the early years. This was probably done to provide additional water for longer runs between water stops. It would also have provided additional weight for better traction. (The tender also had powered axles.) Compare the tender tank in this photo to that in CD00010P120. Note also the changed piping from the boiler to the steam chest, which was also changed, in the two photos. Heisler 1 had a superheater installed some time between the dates of the photos, possibly at the time the tender tank was modified. All four locomotives were also fitted with spark arrestors on the smokestacks to reduce the risk of igniting forest fires. After closure of the Burnt Cabin RR in 1942 Heisler 1 was sold to a company in western Washington. It was later sold to Potlatch Forests (PFI) and used to haul logs from the Headquarters and Pierce areas in Idaho to Orofino. Glen Johnson, who had been the engineer on the “1 Spot” for Ohio Match, was sent to western Washington to prepare the locomotive for the move back to Idaho and rode in it as it was “deadheaded” on freight trains across the state. Johnson retired in Spokane after operating the locomotive for PFI for a number of years. The former “1 Spot” is now on display in a park near the Clearwater River Bridge in Lewiston.
